Surah \r\n Bani Isra'eel (The \r\n Children of Israel)
\r\n Chapter 17: Verses 107-109

\r\n
\r\n

\"Tell \r\n them, (O Prophet!): 'Believe in it (the Quran), or do not believe'. \r\n When it is recited to those who were given the knowledge before \r\n its revelation, they fall down upon their faces in prostration, \r\n and say: 'Glory be to our Lord. Surely the promise of our Lord \r\n was bound to be fulfilled.' And they fall down upon their faces, \r\n weeping, and (the recitation of the Quran) increases their humility.\"

\r\n

Commentary:

\r\n

These verses refer \r\n to those People of the Book (i.e. Jews and Christians) who are \r\n familiar with the teachings of their Scriptures and who are conversant \r\n with its characteristic style.

\r\n

In the first verse \r\n we are reminded of the fact that no one's belief or disbelief \r\n affects the beauty and grandeur of Allah's revelation. \r\n But those endowed with spiritual depth and insight know at once \r\n when they hear Allah's Word, and fall down in awe, love, and humility. \r\n On listening to the Quran, they instantly realized that the Messenger \r\n alluded to in the past Scriptures had come. Those who were \r\n endowed with knowledge and spiritually prepared for it, found \r\n in the Quran a unique sense of satisfaction that their souls had \r\n been longing for for ages.

\r\n

Abul A'la al-Taymee (may Allah \r\n have mercy on him) said with regard to these three verses: \"Whoever is given knowledge that doesn't make him weep, \r\n then clearly he has not been given the knowledge that benefits, \r\n because Allah, the Most High has described knowledge as that which \r\n makes you weep and fall down on your faces in humility.\"
\r\n
\r\n The profound message of the Quran, if studied \r\n with longing and sincerity, certainly does increase one in humility, \r\n connects one with reality, and takes one out of the fancy world \r\n of false dreams. This is what makes the Quran so powerful. And \r\n it is this sudden connection with reality and our innate recognition \r\n of it that moves us to tears in acknowledgement of having at last \r\n received the Truth from God!

\r\n

\r\n No wonder, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose character \r\n itself was Quran, once gave a moving sermon, 'the like of which \r\n was never heard before', in which he said, \"If you knew what I knew, you would laugh little and weep \r\n much!\" [Bukhari, Muslim] \r\n Thereupon, all the Companions (may Allah be pleased with \r\n them) covered their faces, weeping and sniffing.
\r\n
\r\n Let the Month of Ramadan, also known as the Month of the Quran, \r\n be a source of a new beginning in our lives - making us a people \r\n of depth and reflection, who are moved by its message!

Following are some of the \r\n signs and symptoms of weak faith that one can use to assess \r\n whether he or she suffers from spiritual death or disease:

12- Laziness and carelessness \r\n in performing acts of worship: If a person does them \r\n at all, the acts of worship are just empty movements, devoid \r\n of any real feeling. Allah has described the hypocrites \r\n thus: \"...and when they stand up for \r\n prayer, they stand up with laziness...\"[4:142]. \r\n This also includes neglecting to make the most out of special \r\n occasions and times for worship. This indicates that a person \r\n has no interest in earning reward, so he may delay going for \r\n Hajj (pilgrimage) although he is able to do so, or \r\n fail to perform Jihad when he has the strength to do \r\n so, or fail to attend prayers in congregation, or even the \r\n Friday Prayers.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) \r\n said: \"People will keep holding back \r\n from being in the first row (of congregational prayers), until \r\n Allah throws them into the Fire.\"[Abu \r\n Dawood]. This kind of person does not feel any remorse \r\n or guilt if he or she sleeps in and misses one of the obligatory \r\n prayers, or a Sunnah prayer that is strongly encouraged. \r\n Nor does he or she want to make it up later.

Another example of laziness \r\n in performing acts of worship is the neglect of actions which \r\n the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed regularly, such \r\n as praying at night (qiyaam al-layl), setting out early \r\n to go to the mosque, and other voluntary prayers, such as two \r\n Rakahs of Tawbah (prayer of repentance) and Istikhaarah \r\n (prayer for Allah's guidance when confused about a matter).

No \r\n Time to Hibernate!

\r\n

\"Many Muslims today \r\n have a misconception about fasting and the activities \r\n of a fasting person. They go into a state of semi-hibernation, \r\n spending most of their daylight hours in bed. \r\n If they fear Allah, they wake up for prayer, but then \r\n return to sleep immediately. This unnatural sleep \r\n makes them become lazy, dull-witted and often cranky.

\r\n

Ramadan is actually \r\n a time of increased activity wherein the believer, \r\n now lightened of the burdens of constant eating and \r\n drinking, should be more willing to strive and struggle \r\n for Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon \r\n him), passed through nine Ramadans after the migration. \r\n They were filled with decisive events, such as Jihad, \r\n and left us a shining example of sacrifice and submission \r\n to Allah. Throughout Islamic history, most of the \r\n significant battles were won in this month!\"

\r\n

A \r\n QUICK CHECK LIST OF RAMADAN

\r\n
\r\n
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Make a resolve to win the maximum favour of Allah by performing \r\n extra voluntary prayers (Nawaafil), making \r\n frequent Du'a and increased remembrance (Dhikr).
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Try \r\n to recite some Quran after every Prayer. In fact \r\n if you read 3-4 pages after every Prayer you can \r\n easily finish the entire Quran in Ramadan!
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Study \r\n the Tafseer (commentary) every morning.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Invite \r\n a person you are not very close with or your relatives \r\n to your home for Iftar, at least once a week. \r\n You will notice the blessings in your relationships!
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Bring \r\n life to your family! Everyday, try to conclude the \r\n fast with your family and spend some quality time \r\n together to understand each other better.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Give \r\n gifts on 'Eid to at least 5 people: 2 to \r\n your family members, 2 to your good friends, and \r\n 1 to a person whom you love purely for the sake \r\n of Allah.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Make \r\n commitment to join Islamic study circles or Halaqas \r\n to learn more about Islam and improve your own life.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Donate \r\n generously to the masajid, Islamic organizations, \r\n and any where people are in need or oppressed. \"This \r\n is a month of sharing!\"
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Share \r\n Ramadan and its teachings of peace & patience \r\n with your neighbours. Learn how at http://www.soundvision.com/
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Sleep \r\n little, eat little! Make sure you do not defeat \r\n the purpose of fasting by over-indulging in food \r\n and being lazy.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Seek \r\n the rare and oft-neglected rewards of 'the night \r\n better than a 1000 months', Layla-tul-Qadr.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Weep \r\n in private for the forgiveness of your sins: It \r\n is the month of forgiveness and Allah's Mercy and \r\n it's never too late.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Learn \r\n to control your tongue and lower your gaze. Remember \r\n the Prophet's warning that lying, backbiting, and \r\n a lustful gaze all violate the fast!
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Encourage \r\n others to enjoin and love goodness, and to abandon \r\n everything that Allah dislikes. Play the role of \r\n a Da'ee (one who invites to Allah) with zeal, \r\n passion, and sympathy.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
Experience \r\n the joy of Tahajjud prayers late at night \r\n and devote yourself purely and fully to Allah in \r\n the I'tikaf retreat during the last 10 days \r\n of Ramadan.
    \r\n
